One night, the Oilers were up against the Penguins. For whatever reason, Paul Baxter and Gretzky had a grudge going back a little ways. It flared up during this game, as grudges usually do.
Finally, Baxter whacked Gretzky, who dropped to the ice like he'd been shot. The trainers rushed to the ice, and the paramedics were on standby.
"Are you all right? Wayne, you all right" the trainers kept asking.
Lying still, Gretzky whispered, " I'm fine. How is the crowd taking it?"
Now that's showmanship.
Unfortunately, Baxter didn't know when to quit, and continued threatening Gretzky. Dave Semenko then stepped in, leaving Baxter as Semenko usually described a victory - "a vegetable."
